Hailey Sawyer

Hailey Sawyer

Interview With Author Hailey Sawyer

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Hailey Sawyer. I'm the author of Kenji and Yuki: A Japanese Tale and a proud native Rhode Islander. I'm a huge bookworm and coding enthusiast and ever since I was nine years old, I've had a great interest in learning about Japanese culture.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Kenji and Yuki: A Japanese Tale is the title of my latest published book. So in 2017, the idea for this book just sort of popped into my head one day. No epic or emotional backstory as to why. Just an idea that randomly came to me. At first, I wasn’t really sure if it was something I wanted to turn into a novel. But I eventually went ahead with it after giving it some thought.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I'm not sure if this would be considered an "unusual writing habit", but I tend to listen to music or sound effects to either get engulfed in a certain mood or help me understand how something sounds in order to describe it accurately.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh boy do I have quite the list!

But, to answer this question within a resonable length of time, the authors that have influenced me the most are Rick Riordan, Kiyhiko Azuma, J.D Salinger, and Yoshitoki Oima.

For the books that have had the greatest influence on me, titles such as Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, The Evil Wizard Smallbone, Demon Slayer Volume 1, A Silent Voice Volume 1, and the Azumanga Daioh omnibus are high on that list.

What are you working on now?
Like I've mentioned before, I currently have a new novel in development. It's called I'm Pursuing a Monster and, to make a long story short, it's basically Animorphs meets Dexter. As of now, I've completed the first four chapters of it.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
During my time as an author, the most effective method at promoting my novels and other work is Goodreads. Seriously, I can't stress enough just how valuable of an asset Goodreads has been for not only promotion, but also for just how many resources are available on that site and just how friendly and helpful everyone is on there.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Six words. Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling List. Read it! It's some of the best writing advice I've ever seen.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Behold! My top four books I would bring with me to a desert island:

1. The Azumanga Daioh Omnibus by Kiyhiko Azuma

2. Chase of The Rising Sun by Colin Rink

3. The Evil Wizard Smallbone by Delia Sherman

4. Shadow of Wolves by J.R White

Bill Miller

Bill Miller

Interview With Author Bill Miller

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been in the tech industry for over 50 years, the last 30 as a senior executive. There will be a second CEO-related book in 2023, and a third is planned. I love working with small and medium-sized company CEOs and division CEOs of larger companies. I have seen almost everything, including mergers, acquisitions, turnarounds, startups, and everything. I have become an expert at helping new CEOs uncover their blind spots and minimize or eliminate costly mistakes. Future books will address much of my expertise.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Rookie CEO, You Can't Make This Stuff Up! is my first book and was recognized with two awards in its first year of publication (2021). After working for nine first-time CEOs, I wanted to write this book to deliver education and entertainment to readers who are aspiring CEOs, new CEOs, and anyone interested in how companies are led behind the scenes.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Unusual? Not sure about that, but I work with and talk to CEOs almost daily, capturing their stories and challenges and writing them down. I turn these into content on LinkedIn with Friday CEO Tips weekly and blog posts. My books are written on a schedule of 2-3 hour focus time slots on my calendar seven days a week.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
John C Maxwell, Stephen R Covey, Goeffrey Moore, Scott Allan, and many more

What are you working on now?
Projects include:
1. My next book about CEOs' challenges
2. CEO Sucess Story Webinars – 1-hour live interviews with CEOs
3. Blogs on my CEO Insights blog
4. Moderate a CEO Insights Panel at conferences

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Links can be found at https://linktr.ee/beelinebill

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn the process; study books in your genre. Identify your exact ideal reader and write for them.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always be learning. Listen and Learn, & ask questions.

What are you reading now?
I always read advanced copies for other authors and focus on non-fiction business-oriented books. I have a handful of books in my library to read about coaching, content, online business building, online course building, and similar topics.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing the first draft of my next book. I am targeting Q1 2023 for publication. It will reference parts of The Rookie CEO for frameworks and specific contexts.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I never thought about it. Maybe 4 older John C Maxwell's leadership books.

Ramya Julian

Ramya Julian

Interview With Author Ramya Julian

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I've written several picture books and two full length novels, which are both Jane Austen retellings. Several other novels are works in progress.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Malathi.
I was inspired to write this book about a woman in 1960s India who agrees to an arranged marriage in exchange for an education. Casteism plays its role in the story, along with a lot of (awry) family dynamics, and of course, romance. I was inspired to write this story because of late, I've been reading several books written by people of the suppressed caste detailing the injustices they faced.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I listen to Tamil songs, drink green tea, slip on my warm fluffy dressing gown and then I'm off on the laptop!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jane Austen, L M Alcott, L M Montgomery, Enid Blyton, Richmal Crompton and many many more

What are you working on now?
I'm working on Malathi and editing an older book, Aradhana, which is a retelling of Persuasion set during the Partition of India.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I'm still new to this so I'll be able to answer that question in a year!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I consider myself a new author, but my advice to anyone, fellow author or not, is don't give up!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don't wait for inspiration. Just write. It's okay if it's nonsense.

What are you reading now?
The Happiness factor by Kirk Douglas,
What Alice forgot by Liane Moriarty, The devil's daughter by Lisa Kleypas, Through the Looking Glass – a study of language

What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm going to keep at it and meanwhile, I'll hopefully get better at marketing

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Pride and Prejudice, Anne of Green gable, little women

Karen Gruber

Karen Gruber

Interview With Author Karen Gruber

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
When Lions Roar. Seven years ago, my family and I got the unbelievable opportunity to travel to South Africa. We spent two weeks on Safari with a group of family members; and a third week exploring Cape Town, just me, my husband, and our daughter. This trip was the furthest away I had ever been from the States and seemed very exotic to me, having the opportunity to go to Africa.

Unlike the main character of the book, Maggie, I was ecstatic about the opportunity to go Africa. This was something so out of the realm of possibility for me, it wasn't even on my life list. It was unfathomable to me that I would ever get to do something like this, so when the organizer of the trip said “Yes, you may bring along your six-year old”, we were all in.

The continent of Africa is massive and the cultures within it are far too numerous to mention. I only experienced a tiny little taste, but even that minuscule morsel was life changing.

Being out in the wilderness, the Bush, the Veld, the Savannah, it all felt like coming home to me. I felt such a connection to that land and its inhabitants, particularly the animals. I wish everyone would get to have the experience I did. I know I came back a different woman, Africa cracked open a deep desire to live a more primal life. And by that, I mean live authentically without all the walls and facades. I want people to see me, to know me, the soul of me.

My experience in Africa was just begging to come forth in some fashion. I was captivated by how the lodges were run and the guides all working together and the gloriousness of the animals. Getting to see these beautiful beasts in their natural environment is so moving, I cannot seem to put words to it.

The sky is different in Africa and night after night we saw constellations that we never see in the Northern hemisphere. My daughter got to see the Scorpio constellation, her Zodiac sign, which was breathtaking. The food, the clothing, the singing rhythm of the drums, the aromas, hearing an animal call in victory or distress across the camp, monkeys stealing our things, sleeping in structures with no electricity to visiting the most luxurious of accommodations. Every part of everyday was a new adventure.

My intent with the novel When Lions Roar, was to give readers a taste, a tease, of what it was like to be in Africa and spark a desire to make that trip. There is a harsh unforgiving edge to South Africa, but the contrast, the majestic wonder and the beauty all come together and are present in the most magical of ways. How could I not write about that?

In many ways, like our heroine, Maggie, Africa permeated my soul and healed me in ways I did not realize I needed to be healed. That's why it is so important to stay open to the experiences and opportunities that come your way and to stay curious about and lean into the offerings life has for you.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
To quiet my mind and body and get down to the task of writing, I have ritualized my process so that the creativity and words are in the flow no matter where I find myself. Having a ritual, a sequence of repeatable acts, makes this activity and the time devoted to it a sacred offering and creates an energetic shift.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Margaret Mitchel – Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind is the first book I read that I remember leaving an impression on me. I read this book when I was 12 while on a family vacation. I love the richness of the descriptions, desperately wanting to fall in love myself, and the experience desperation and devastation of war through her eyes. It makes me feel such a wide range of emotions that stays with me years later.

Bryce Courtenay – The Power of One

Despite being difficult to read in parts due to the cruelty depicted, I loved this book. The resilience of the main character and the obstacles he overcomes makes The Power of One a book of grit, strength of the human spirit, and hope. The writing is enthralling and rich with symbolism.

Wallace Stegner – Angle of Repose

Angle of Response is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. The writing is so potent and immersive. The storyline is of great interest and he created characters you cheer for and hope for, even when they are in opposition. A testament to the courageous, heartiness, and ingenuity of the American pioneers and the American spirit.

What are you working on now?
I haven’t traveled much in the past few years, so I am currently cooking up all kinds of exotic travel for my family and I. I feel my novels will all have a global perspective through the eyes of an American. I suppose you can call this period an era of massive research! On the non-fiction front I am working on a sexual education series for girls which focuses on the sacredness of their bodies, the sacredness of sexuality, and the sacredness of their spirit.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am a big fan of the Amazon platform. I have been able to produce my book in 3 different formats: eBook, paperback, and audiobook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never underestimate the power of writing for yourself. . Even the things I write just for me allow me to express myself, my visions, my soul in a creative way. Writing helps me organize my thoughts. It helps me find my true voice and expression as they bubble up as words on a page. Sometimes I'm quite surprised, by what ends up on a page, but I trust it is there for a reason. It is there for me or for another who comes across these words. I have found that writing is a major stress reliever and a great source of healing. For me, it doesn't matter if I am writing in my morning pages, writing an article or creating a book. It is all a deep healing process and an incredible creative outlet for me.

Ultimately, I write to express myself creatively. I am still discovering my unique voice and my message in this world. Writing creates a space of stillness and quiet that enables my voice to come through without overthinking, without self-censorship, without trying to get it right. Writing brings clarity to my voice, my thoughts, and my beliefs. It is extraordinary what I uncover through my writing. It has the power to heal and uncover hidden nuggets I never knew were buried deep inside. It is a process where I get to face my truth and come out a different person on the other side.

I believe that everyone has access to their own healing and discovering their truth through creative expression, writing is not the only medium for this opportunity. Any creative outlet you choose provides a restorative result. It is my desire for every woman to fall in love with her unique creative expression.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never critique while you are writing, never think, just let it rip while you’re in the flow

What are you reading now?
The Crucible – Arthur Miller

The Introduction of this version is quite fascinating. It draws parallels between the Salem Witch Trials and the persecution that was happening in the US during the McCarthy era. What happened to Arthur Miller during this time when he refused to publicly speak out against others and questioned the government’s involvement is eerily similar to what has happened to individuals during the past 2 years in American politics.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next goal is to have When Lions Roar selected for Reese’s Book Club. Do you have an in?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Circe – Madeline Miller

Circe captured my imagination from the first pages, with a character I was unfamiliar with in Greek Mythology. It is a thrilling read to follow this lesser known goddess on her life passage. The storytelling is masterfully crafted and kept me wanting more-it does not disappoint. This book shows me what’s possible when an author unleashes her creativity.

The Sheltering Sky – Paul Bowles

The Sheltering Sky is a fascinating book for me. I don’t believe I have ever read anything quite like it. It is a dark read as it takes me on a journey of humans and their limits. The characters are not necessarily likeable and the thought I had when I finished the book was “disturbing”, but the writing is extraordinary and stays with me long after the final page has been turned.

Main Street – Sinclair Lewis

I am fascinated with Main Street, as it tells a story of a woman with big ideas and thoughts. Through marriage she is brought to a small town where her ideas and ways of being are not welcome. It is the epitome of the inequalities women have faced for centuries. Even though it takes place in the early 1900’s, I can still relate to the main character’s struggles and challenges today. The writing is lyrical and paints a vivid picture.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Olivia. I am a self published author and poet. I have written and published 8 books. A couple are fiction books, but I prefer to write poetry. I find it to be more creative and expressive.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is Words the Angels Speak. It is a book of christian poetry. It was inspired by the testimony of my favorite wrestler and how he turned his life around and became a Christian.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I'm not sure. Usually, I write in spurts. I'll start a project then stop for a few weeks or months then go back to it. This latest book was the only one that I wrote consistently every day until it was done. Generally, I listen to music while I write, I love to have refreshments next to me. Sometimes, I'll look at images or whatever is inspiring my current project. it helps to visualize and map everything out in my head.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My current inspirations are: My favorite wrestler, but I love Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as Chaucer. I sort of tried to pattern my poems after them as far as rhyming is concerned. I love all my poems to end in rhymes, it makes it more interesting.

What are you working on now?
I'm not writing anything new at the moment. all my time is being spent trying to promote my current book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don't know about the best. This is my first attempt at promoting my work. I have been using social media and YouTube to share videos, trailers, and read samples of the book.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you love it, stick with it. don't give up. it takes a while to get to where you want. I'm still on the journey. I love writing, personally, i am just happy that my work is out there.

To never give up. There are all types of people in the world, one of them is bound to want to read what you have written.

What are you reading now?
I am reading a book that my brother sent me. It is in the Heroes of Olympus Series. I just started it and it's actually pretty good.

What’s next for you as a writer?

Michelle Murray

Interview With Author Michelle Murray

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I've written ten different novels, journals and children's books. I primarily write novels. I'm a combat Veteran of the United States Army. I find absolute joy in the written word, traveling, cooking, SCUBA Diving, animals (including my three cats), and, of course, spending time with my adult son. I also enjoy teaching and helping others reach their fullest potential.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is called The Burg, which is Book Three of my Stoic Souls series. It is actually inspired by some true events in the State of Oregon…but they have been fictionalized and embellished in the novel. In the book, a combat Veteran must destroy a web of corruption in order to save a kidnapped infant.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don't really have any unusual writing habits, however (don't you love that word?), I do insist on completing a chapter when writing a book before I take a break. If I don't, I may lose my momentum!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Grisham and Herman Wouk have most influenced my style of writing.

What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on a novel due out on November 22nd, 2022. It is Book Four of my Stoic Souls series. The series features female protagonists that face and overcome adversity in ways they had no idea they could. Book Four is called Two Junkies and a Demon which takes us to a world where the drug culture of a sprawling desert city intersect with the literal forces of Heaven and Hell for an adventure of a lifetime.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best method for promotion of my books has been a combination of cross country in person events and Ingram Spark's ipage.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My biggest advice for new authors is WRITE. Don't get caught up in overthinking anything. Just get the story out of your head and you can always make it pretty later. I also advise new writers to research the business of writing if they plan to make a living of this. Understand how to do the marketing and promotion, or be prepared to hire someone who can.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Commit. If you are a writer, you must give time and energy to the creation and promotion of your stories. Story creation and promotion are full time commitments not part time.

What are you reading now?
I'm reading John Grisham's latest, Sparring Partners.

What’s next for you as a writer?
What's next for me as a writer is finishing my Stoic Souls series and then adapting three of them into screenplays.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If stranded on a desert island, must have books for me would be The Bible, The Desert Survival Skills book by David Alloway, John Grisham's The Judge's List, and a book of blank pages with a pen, in which I could write.

Caroline Jaquish

Caroline Jaquish

Interview With Author Caroline Jaquish

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a dark fantasy author who writes for those who truly embrace the darkness within. I grew up in Pennsylvania with 'my head in the clouds' and I don't regret it. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. My first four books were almost completed as several pages hidden around my room to keep my family from finding them, and then I compiled them together as an adult and published them after almost a decade. I now have six books available with the seventh dropping in December 2022. I have an ongoing caffeine addiction, and three magnificent dogs with nerdy names. Home is wherever the military sends my husband, but my heart is in Asylum, the world I created, where I spend most of my days dreaming up stories for my readers.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Through the Eyes of a Dragon.
A great deal of my inspiration come from my younger self. Through the Eyes of a Dragon deals with some trauma recovery that took me a long time to embrace myself.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I hit a roadblock, I walk in circles and blast music until the scene comes together to the tunes. Around 90% of my individual scenes in my books have a score in my head already based on whichever song solidified the picture in my mind.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Neil Gaiman and G.R.R.M. A Song of Ice and Fire is probably my favorite series to date, though I also love the Ranger's Apprentice by John Flannagan

What are you working on now?
Currently, the seventh book in my To Be Nameless series, Through the Eyes of a Necromancer. I will have a cover release on Halloween and the book will be published in December.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Honestly, I'm not sure. The promotional side of indie publishing is definitely not my strong suite. I would much rather write thousands upon thousands of words a day than write a single ad. I probably have most of my reads from other authors and a few readers on Facebook pages I'm a part of.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Create your brand! Don't let what people may think of you get in the way. Don't shy away from the unpopular, and always write from your heart. Everything else will catch up eventually.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Everything has already been done, so what matters is how you, specifically, do it.

What are you reading now?
I'm currently reading a wide variety of other indie books, as well as working my way through A Court of Thorns and Roses. I've heard good things, but I haven't hit whatever part is supposed to keep me up reading at night yet. Hoping it gets better.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Every four books in my series change who the main character is: the first four a girl named Eclipse, the second four a girl named Astrid. I'm really excited to have a male main character in the books following Astrid's tale.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
War and Peace, because it would take a while for me to get through it, a collection of Shakespeare and Gaiman, and then probably A Song of Ice and Fire combined into one book if at all possible.

Lisa Henry

Lisa Henry

Interview With Author Lisa Henry

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a fairly new writer, having only been seriously writing since 2020. I have handwritten 2 books, one Mystery/Thriller, Shea's Saviour and one Sci-Fi, Heading Home. I'm currently 8 chapters into my paranormal book, Missing.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I am currently 8 chapters into Missing. I was scrolling through Twitter one day and someone was posting pictures with captions like 'this is you next book cover, what is it about?' and i kind of made up the story from there.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I listen to LoFi music a lot when I'm writing. Sometimes it steps up a bit into dance or rave music, depending on the scene I'm writing. Whilst writing the battle scene for my second book, Heading Home, I listened to Massive Attack 'Angel' on repeat, it all depends on the scene and the mood I'm in.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have met both Karen Rose and Tess Gerritsen in person and have read all of their books. I enjoy looking at the layout of different genres.

What are you working on now?
Im working on Missing, a paranormal story revolving around 14 year old Luna who has the ability to speak to and help the dead. Although this time it's different.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Thats a good question, I haven't actually found the best website to promote as yet, but I use my Twitter page a lot.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don't let others bring you down, if it feels good to you then write it. Worry about the editing and mistakes later. Get your ideas down and go with the flow.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Best ever? Wow that would be hard to express as I've been given a lot of advice over the years. I guess it was recently when my husband encouraged me to write for the first time in 2020. That's where Shea's Saviour was born!

What are you reading now?
I'm currently an ARC reader for Elizabeth Holland's new book A Cornish Vintage Dress Shop.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing! I have my paranormal book to finish, plus collaborations with two of my children to write.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh wow! Karen Rose Quarter To Midnight, Tess Gerritsen The Surgeon, Nuala Ellwood The Day of The Accident and Sam Carrington The Missing Wife
