Saugia Smiley

Interview With Author Saugia Smiley

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written two books both are the beginning of what I hope to be a long series. I was born in Jamaica but have lived in the states since I was a teenager. I love traveling and have seen 70% of the world as a former flight attendant. Post Covid – I have retreated to writing and working on helping other authors publish their books.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Weathered. I love thrillers and romance and after reading a new Alex Cross book from my favorite author James Patterson I found myself writing furiously.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Does lighting candles, having the t.v on and music in the background count?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
James Patterson and Tamora Pierce.
Growing up I loved Tamora Pierce novels they gave me strength as I tried to navigate the cultural differences that I faced when I moved to the states.

What are you working on now?
The sequel to Weathered – Showered a novel that follows Cyrena’s daughter as she navigates a life of disappointment with the staggering belief that she is the product of a monster.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I typically use amazon advertisement and instagram

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t stop writing even if you can’t publish right now. It is important to maintain your habit of writing as often as possible until you can write everyday.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write everyday! no matter if its by putting pen to paper, typing or diction just get in the habit of writing everyday like a job.

What are you reading now?
Twilight. I’ve read it before but I was feeling nostalgic the last few days so I bought a new copy.

What’s next for you as a writer?
More books of course. Though it has taken me some time to get back in the swing of things I am making it my mission to write at least two books a year and publish as quickly as I can.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lioness Rampant – Tamora Pierce, Howls Moving Castle – Diana Wynne Jones, Queen of the Darkness – Anne Bishop, and The Darkest Kiss – Kerri Arthur

P.K. Clouse

Interview With Author P.K. Clouse

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have always been a voracious reader, but never expected to be a writer. A Cowboy, A Ranch, and Love is my first novel. It is a modern-day Christian, western romance – wholesome, fun, and romantic. I hit the publish button on a Thursday, and received my Medicare card on Saturday. Stopping to count my blessings was the inspiration for this novel. My hope is that as people read this book, it brings a smile to their face and prompts them to thank God for the special people and blessings in their life.
I live on an Angus beef cattle farm in Southwest Missouri. My faith, family, and friends — along with the farm and my collie dog, Harley — are what I thank God for every day. A line from this book, “a work in progress, brought to you by God’s Amazing Grace and Incredible Patience…” is how I view my life.
I encourage anyone considering doing something new, different, challenging after 60 – go for it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Cowboy, A Ranch, and Love is my first novel. Stopping to count my blessings was the inspiration for this novel. My hope is that as people read this book, it brings a smile to their face and prompts them to thank God for the special people and blessings in their life.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Lots of early mornings – handwritten notes all over the place – always have paper and pen ready as “ideas” drop in

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I don’t know that they “influenced” me, but I have always been a voracious reader – some of the authors I have read are Debbie Macomber, Nora Roberts, James Patterson – I read a wide variety of fiction.

What are you working on now?
The sequel to A Cowboy, A Ranch, and Love

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve done local interviews with papers and TV and emails and texts, along with reaching out to various groups and influencers

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I went the self-publishing route, and hired someone to help with cover, formatting, and loading to KDP. A marketing plan is key when you self-publish and will require as much or more effort than the writing.

Kady Hinojosa

Interview With Author Kady Hinojosa

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born and raised in California, and have always loved creative writing. However, I took a logic track in college and studied Computer Science. I met my husband, Jose (an Army Aviator), in Washington DC while on active duty in the Navy. After many years of travel, we now live in the Texas Hill Country near kids and grandkids.

The bulk of my career was spent working as a Business Analyst/Quality Assurance expert for financial, and other, websites. After retiring, I returned to my love of writing and wove my IT experience into my first novels – #HuntedLives, #JusticePrevails, and the soon-to-be-released #DanceFever – the Mali Hooper Thriller trilogy.

I enjoy exploring topics that concern me, and writing about them in a way that, hopefully, captures the readers’ attention in an entertaining manner.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
#DanceFever, which comes out in early September 2022, is the explosive conclusion of the Mali Hooper Thriller trilogy. DanceFever is one of the street names for fentanyl. This book centers on that, specifically candy that is spiked with fentanyl.

With drugs freely flowing into the country from our southern border, the opioid crisis is at an all-time high. Most of the fentanyl that comes in from our border is in pill form, fake oxycodone pills for ex. But spiked candy is a rising trend, and so dangerous. Fentanyl is cheap to make and incredibly potent (the equivalent of 4 grains of salt can kill an adult!). I have school-age grandkids so, of course, this is a huge concern for me. I wanted to highlight it in my book.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know about unusual, but I do write an outline first so I know what direction to take. That being said, the outline morphs as I write and as the characters and story reveal themselves to me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Janet Evanovich. Her books are amazing! Nora Roberts/JD Robb and David Archer are two others I enjoy. I also read Lee Child. I have to say that a new series of books I’m reading, at the encouragement of my 11yr old grandson, are the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. It’s a YA series but so well-written. This author can describe a scene like no other, I feel like I’m in the books when I read them.

What are you working on now?
My focus right now is publishing #DanceFever (and all that entails). I’m also looking into making the trilogy available on audio. As far as a new book is concerned, I’m exploring a few ideas related to corruption but no outline has been written yet.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I publish on Amazon so I promote my book there. I also promote them on my various social media accounts. The best means of promotion, however, is with great websites and newsletters like Awesome Gang. I don’t have the reach on my own yet and count on promotion sites to help.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, write, write. Sometimes the most difficult part is getting started. That little negative voice in our head can discourage us from writing, saying we’re not good enough, no one will buy it, etc. Ignore that and start writing. The other advice is to read, read, read, especially in your genre. One of the best ways to learn the art of writing is to study how others have done it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never say never, and never give up.

What are you reading now?
The Noah Wolf series by David Archer
The Warrior series by Erin Hunter

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a number of events coming up this fall in the Texas Hill Country (attending market days in Boerne and Blanco plus some book signings) where I’ll be promoting the trilogy. And I plan to start writing the next book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I get lost in her books and she makes me laugh.

Jo Richardson

Interview With Author Jo Richardson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I’m Jo & I’m an introvert. I don’t really like to talk about myself much because let’s face it, it’s more about them *nods to characters* than it is about me, but, simply put:
I’m a huge FanAddict – I’m into everything from the big screen to the small screen and I am Avengers obsessed. I’m a mystery aficionado who’s paranormally fascinated, and am a graduate of the world renowned Sarcasm academy.

I’m broken, I’m twisted, and I am a firm believer that love is perfectly imperfect. Because life is messy. But I like to write about the mess and make something good come out of it.

I’ve written 9 published books – some are full length, some are novellas, some are part of anthologies and I’m working on my 10th with an old writing buddy as we speak.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest title is Summer Job – it’s about Ella Green. She’s a sassy, smart PI who’s just trying to take a vacation. Only she can’t seem to turn down money when so much of it’s being offered for such a small, “easy” job.

Her character was inspired by the lead character in another book I’ve written about a guy named Jackson Stiles – she’s sort of a “Jackson adjacent” story, and although Summer Job is a stand alone story, Ella Green is related to someone in that Jackson’s life. Once I started thinking about her, I couldn’t stop. That’s how it goes, sometimes.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write stream of consciousness all the way through until the end. Sometimes sections of those thoughts are the best parts of the story I end up with. I try very… VERY hard not to edit until I’m done because in the past, I’ve taken forever to finish because I keep on going back to the beginning to “read through” … “real quick”… *eye roll*.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh my… Let’s see…

Jim Butcher. LOVE his Dresden Files series because our hero just cannot catch a break and there’s something beautiful in that.

Sarah Addison Allen, because I love the subtle way she adds the paranormal to her stories. It’s not over the top, in your face (which is great in it’s own right) – it just kind of sneaks up on you and I love that. It’s magical.

I could name so many people that I love reading, there just isn’t enough time in the day (or space in this interview).

What are you working on now?
I’m co-writing a story with a great friend of mine, Marie Winters. We’re putting a story together for a holiday anthology coming out this November.

The story is set in a small town in Wisconsin where our leading lady loves it there, and our main man does not.

It’s called – How to save a rural mall (in three easy steps)

Step 1: Overhaul Christmas village.
Step 2: Get the business owners on board.
Step 3: Hire the best Santa the Oak Grove Mall has ever seen.

Candace Kane has one goal this holiday season. To save Christmas.

Nick Frost just needs a job, a stiff drink, and to forget how he lost his livelihood, his friends, and most of his money in less than a day.

He’s not exactly happy about filling in as Santa Claus at the Oak Grove Mall back in his hometown of Hillcrest, Wisconsin. Candace isn’t thrilled about it either but she needs to get Nick on board if she wants to keep the mall from closing and keep her new job.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have kept all of my books on Amazon only, and enroll them into the Kindle Unlimited program. So when I promote it’s usually gearing toward that. I use BookFunnel a lot these days, and BookSirens, and I try to find other affordable places that won’t break my bank account – to try and spread the word in hopes of finding new readers. You never know who’s going to stumble across one of my stories and absolutely love it. When that happens I’m flying high for months.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t do this for the money. If you’re doing it for the money, you’re doing it wrong. Do it because you LOVE it. And because you absolutely have to tell a story that’s been eating at your brain.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you have no critics, you will have no success.

What are you reading now?
I’ve picked up Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On books and I am so excited about them!
If you’ve read Fan Girl, you know exactly why I’m reading about Simon and Baz!

What’s next for you as a writer?
My partner and crime and I have plans for a story we feel pretty passionate about – we’re going to work on getting that published and then start the next story. And then the next one, and the next, and the next… you know the drill.

I’ve got little projects coming up – anthologies I’ve signed up for, shared worlds, too. The next few years are going to be very busy. 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
OK. I’ve thought about this a lot actually. And I’m trying not cheat and mention series. I assume that does not count. So…
1) Lord of the Rings,
2) The Great Gatsby,
3) The Count of Monte Cristo (that should keep me busy for a while), and
4) The Outsiders.

BUT, just in case we ARE talking series counts:
1) Jim Butcher’s entire series of Dresden Files,
2) The Lord of the Rings (including The Hobbit),
3) George RR Martin’s GOT books (he’d have to come and finish them for me tho), and
4) The Twilight books. Because, that’s why.
