Interview With Author J.L. Anderson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have always been an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy. And in the back of my mind I have always liked to imagine my own stories. I remember as a little kid writing 1 page detective stories, but I never really thought I'd write a full novel. I am fortunate to be surrounded by good people who encourage my weird quirks and hobbies, which ultimately led to me becoming an author. I am beyond excited to share my first fantasy novel with you all!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My fantasy novel is called Dual Fires. I have definitely been inspired by the variety of magical worlds and crazy twists I've seen in other stories. I had one type of twist in mind particularly that I hadn't really seen before and I was inspired to explore it further. I am sure glad I did, because a wonderful story came out of it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don't know if it is unusual, but I find myself habitually getting stuck in my writing only to have ideas and words come flying to my brain as soon as I decide it is time to go to bed.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am an avid Brandon Sanderson fan, I think Mistborn was a definite influence on me. I also read the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin right before I started reading; the world there really inspired me to write my own story.

What are you working on now?
Book marketing primarily! Spreading the word. I have also started on a sequel as well as a separate story.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I've had decent success with social media and that has been my main focus. Now I am spending more time reaching out to bloggers and libraries and wonderful sites like this!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
The first draft stinks. And that is totally fine! It is amazing to look back on your work and see how much improvement you see with each pass, so don't worry about it being perfect right off the bat.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
"Just Do It!" – in my best Shia LaBeouf voice

What are you reading now?
I recently finished the Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty which was interesting. And I just started the Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I have heard so many wonderful things and am really enjoying it so far!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Fame. Fortune. A big TV deal. One can dream right?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
