Back when I was like 14 or 15 I started my own paper route on my block and a few other adjacent streets in my neighborhood. One day a local business saw my hustle and asked me to deliver flyers for their business to all the houses in town. Of course I said yes! Think he gave me $15 or so. It was a lot of money at the time.
The day he wanted the flyers delivered just so happen to also be my birthday. That didn't matter to me as I was making money. Well when the day finally came it was pouring rain. Not just rain but an unusually cold ice like rain.
As I walked through town freezing I made an important rule that I have followed for 40 years. That rule is to never again work on my birthday. I have never broke that rule. I can picture in my head the exact moment I made this decision and sticking to it was hard.
As I got older instead of taking the day off I just decided to make the whole week a vacation week. It also helped me save up my sick days.
